Corals take thousands to millions of years to grow, yet they can be broken, strangled, and killed in a matter of days by abandoned fishing line. Once left on the reef, this line creates an invisible gauntlet for marine life—snaring fins, flippers, jaws, and bodies.
Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtles), endangered Hawaiian monk seals, sharks, dolphins, eagle rays, and countless reef fish hunt, rest, and shelter directly within coral structures. In areas such as Kahē Point and China Walls, it has become nearly impossible for marine animals to move safely through the reef without risk of entanglement or becoming hooked.
The consequences are devastating:
We have witnessed the disappearance of whitetip reef sharks that once rested in reef caves, eagle rays that once fed regularly, and countless turtles dragging line that impairs their ability to swim, mate, forage, and migrate—leaving them in constant, silent suffering.
Removing entanglement from coral reefs is not simple—and doing it incorrectly can cause even more damage. Few divers are trained to safely remove fishing line without breaking coral, injuring themselves, or harming wildlife.
These reefs are fished daily, and new line is added constantly. Without ongoing intervention, cleanups cannot keep pace with the damage.
That is why trained, experienced divers are essential.
Our team brings more than 30 years of specialized experience in marine entanglement removal, with techniques developed specifically for:
This work saves lives immediately while preserving the reef structures marine life depends on.
Through targeted cleanup events and ongoing response efforts, we:
Each successful removal prevents future injuries and deaths—not just once, but repeatedly, as the reef becomes safer for every animal that passes through it.
These areas urgently need protection, and we need more skilled divers, more equipment, and more removal events to offset the daily accumulation of fishing gear on Hawaiʻi’s reefs.
